Shop is OPEN on Super Bowl Sunday 9-2. Weather is going to hit almost 40 in Sisters with no precipitation in the forecast so it ought to be the best day out of the next 4 to get on the water.
Speaking of Monday (2/10/25), we are really excited about night one (of 2) for our Fulling Mill Movie Night. I have 16 people signed up and can easily hold another 9 people for the three 30 minute films we will share on Monday night in Sisters at 6 PM.
The event is at Stellar Reality in their amazing open space with a huge TV. That is on Hood Street directly across from Ace Hardware.
If you want to be with us for this fascinating fly fishing chronicle about Howard Croston in the UK who I consider one of the greatest all around fly anglers of modern times, please give the shop a call, stop in or email Jeff and we will put you on the list.
The next event is the following Monday night February 17th, same time and place. We encourage people to watch both nights as the story builds from episode one through episode 6.
I got an opportunity to go back to Patagonia to work on some promotional materials with my friend and guide Esteban at Southern Loops Flyfishing.
I will be there March 1-8, 2025 and we would love to find 2 more people to fill (2nd guide) Martin’s boat that week. I have 4 more guests going at the end of March, so there are technically 3 full weeks we can accommodate 2 to 4 anglers per week in March. Our 2025 special is still $5000 for 2 people. If you add the camp trip option there is a premium added to the costs we can talk about. I think for younger travelers this is worth doing but does add cost to the “special”.
I just got flights booked yesterday and excited to spend another week in my favorite place in the world. Patagonia is a huge part of who I am and I love to share that with anyone who is interested.
My friend Jesse who is one of the better anglers I know had another really fine day on the Metolius yesterday! He sent me an encouraging text this AM, with about 15 fish caught on a combination of nymphing pre-hatch, and a sweet after lunch BWO hatch dry fly session to enjoy too.
It’s going to be pretty cold here through Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. After that is moderates and we have days above the freezing mark and nights that are not so bitter.
If you do go to the Met, Perdigons, Frenchies, Eggs, Caddis Pupa (Tan 14-16, Orange 8-10, Amber 14) Micro Mayfly, 2 Bit Hookers and both euro style streamers or big articulated streamers that you can swing, strip or fish under an indicator.
The Fall River is pretty darn snowy for access but with spring fed water also offers some good fishing conditions. Look for afternoon BWO hatches in a size 18 or 20, and small black Midges in a 22-24. This is 7x tippet time, so get a spool of that and you’ll fool more fish certainly.
Knock Down and KD Duns, Film Critics, RS2, Captive Dun and Sparkle Duns are great flies now.
Euro Streamers, especially Olive or Black have been our best producers on most days.
Perdigons, Tungsten Micro May’s in a BWO Color, and the same with a 2 Bit Hooker. And of course Fall River fish love Eggs and Mops too.
The Crooked River I believe will get pretty iced up this week. I can’t know that for sure today, but I think it will. Be prepared for that occurrence and maybe steer clear of it for 7 or 8 days. In any case, if the day time highs are in the 20’s and night time lows in the single digits for a few days coming up, then being is a deep canyon that orientates North/South you are not going to see much in the way of sun and solar radiation off the rocks.
I’d skip the Crooked for a bit.
I have heard (recently and throughout the years) of many odd, sometimes inappropriate interactions between male and female anglers on the waters here.
My wife Tina says people fish much closer to her when she is alone or with another girlfriend as opposed to being on the river with me nearby.
Sequoia one of our shop employees and guides has experienced men fishing really close to try to get to the same water and the same fish as her.
What took the cake and why I am saying something today is we had 3 gals come from the Metolius recently and they had such a bizarre (and frankly piss poor) interaction with some dude I had to speak up. Another make angler literally took the rod out of a female anglers hands because he thought he could teach her something.
That’s rude. 1st of all, fly fishing is personal and it’s practice. Self discovery time is essential, and people will learn when they want to learn, not when they are forced to it.
2nd, NO MATTER who the other angler is nearby, we give them space and the both written and unwritten rules of being on the water. Never got so close you can cast over the other persons fish. If someone is waiting on water for a hatch to begin, and they are not fishing but ready to pounce on the 1st rises they see, the answer is no it is not ok for you to swing a streamer through there or “just let me run my nymph by them for a few casts”. The fish we are waiting for to rise to the hatch we anticipate happening soon are going to be put down by that.
Be cool out there. Everyone. Both male and female anglers. Have good etiquette. Don’t encroach.
Stay warm this week and tie some flies, read a good book on fishing and if you’re a local come watch the films on Monday night and get together with us for some good fun and interesting topics.
Jeff
