It looks like the storm has passed, and it was a significant driver of water levels all over the state.
Locally, you will want to know where you can go this week with the beautiful weather and where you can’t because the water is simply unsafe and there is no possibility of fishing.
On the good side are the spring creeks. The Metolius at the Allingham Gauge held really steady, with a smaller increase from Lake Creek only slightly rising the river. Canyon Creek got high, but the Canyon to Candle Creek below Bridge 99 is fishable with higher water and a little off color compared to our usual clear water on our favorite spring creek.
Over the years we’ve seen a push of water like this excite the Bull Trout so I would not hesitate to swing or strip big streamers, or nymph fish big streamers under an indicator, or smaller streamers Euro Style.
Caddis Pupa, Stone Nymphs, A PINK BEAD Walt’s Worm Type Fly, Perdigons, 2 Bit Hookers and Eggs will be good choices now.
Look for both #18 BWO and #14-16 Cinygmula to be in the hatch cycle this week with the good weather days coming. One word of advice, just because they are hatching doesn’t mean the fish will rise to them and sometimes the really abrupt change to sunny and warm weather has that effect. If you don’t get any dry fly eaters, be prepared with the nymphs and streamers.
The Fall River melted a fair bit of snow in the last few days with all the rain. It is soggy down there but the fishing is good.
BWO’s and Midges are the 2 main hatches. With the warm sunny days coming, add a Purple Hippie Stomper to the mix and don’t hesitate to skitter that fly.
Plenty of great days on nymphs and small streamers so plan for that and have fun in what is some of the best water conditions anywhere in the state right now.
I have a friend going to Haystack tomorrow to re-con that. It was iced over recently, but I would think it will be letting go of the ice by now, or any day coming up soon.
THE UGLY
The Crooked River is getting pounded and I don’t see it coming back to shape for 10 to 20 days. That runoff from the Ochoccos is unleashed, and I believe it is going to have to keep going for a long period based on the recent heavy rains over snow, and the warmth coming up.
Hopefully Mid March, by spring vacation we will be over the run off and out there enjoying Blue Wing Olive season.
The Lower Deschutes is incredibly high and there is no way to fish the Maupin area and I would guess it will be 7 to 10 days before we will.
Be safe and have fun. The best is coming.
Jeff
