Hello (hola) from Buenos Aires. I checked in with some fishing friends at home in Oregon and have a few updates for you.
The Metolius has been best with nymphs, honestly everyone is saying it is best with a small tan pupa and by a long shot. Good reports from Doug and Bob, Phil and Chester. Some dry fly action is found here and there around noon to 3, but keep your eyes peeled on Cinygmula hatches towards evening now too. I know Central Oregon has been in “severe clear” mode, and the weather is turning tonight, so I think our hatch will improve with the weather change. Golden Stone nymphs, Perdigons, eggs, 2 bits, zebra midges are essential flies for the Metolius almost every day, especially now. BWO #18 is the main hatch and plan to fish the cycle of that from nymph to emerger and cripple patterns and certainly adult fins and tuck a spinner in the box just in case.
The Crooked River is still too high to fish. 100 cfs is normal winter flow, 250-275 is normal summer flow, and over 400 cfs sucks IMO, and so it’s extra sucky at 1700 cfs now! inflow to the reservoir is dropping so that is a good sign things will improve soon.
Fall River is really good and with spring break coming up it will be a good hitter for the rest of the month. BWO and midges are the main hatches, keep a few March Browns in the fly box as that could materialize in to a real hatch anytime now. Best fishing has been on micro streamers. Eggs, Walt’s Worms, Perdi’s, Zebras, 2 bits and Tungsten Micro Mays are great.
Lower D at Maupin is still high, but fishable for sure. Stonefly nymphs, green rock worms, Perdigons, hares ear, PT, Blue Psycho Prince and micro jig- streamers will do the trick. March Browns ought to show pretty soon…
I’ve seen a few friends on Facebook who have been to Lake Billy Chinook and found some Bull’s. Water is still only 40 so it’s going to need to warm up for the fly bite to be better.
Haystack is accessible. Let me know what you found if you have gone lately.
Anyone know about Chick? Ice free yet?
Ochocco Reservoir will be a good Stillwater option now. I’ll try to get some intel for the next report.
Justesen Ranch lakes are fishing super good! Chironomid pupa and emergers plus leeches and a green MOP. $150 p/p per day. Tell Amanda Jeff sent you, or call the shop and have Aaron book you for a day.
Northern Patagonia in Argentina was great. Fall was just blowing in and the fishing was pretty great, the wildlife was the best I’ve ever seen. I’m going to be posting more dates and schedules to go in a newsletter I need to write when I get home, and on social media.
Hopefully my guide friend there will come to Oregon in August and we will do a few fun events to spread the word about the trip here.
I’m a tired guy, it’s 10:30 pm and I’ve got an alarm set to go out fishing tomorrow morning with Urban Dorado Outfitters who I am hopeful to cement a relationship for bookings with tomorrow and something that I want to add to the portfolio of things to do here on the way or way back from the Patagonia main event.
So with that, Buenos Noches amigos!
I’ll be back to the shop Thursday… although I did just get invited back to Chile.
No, I’m coming home.
Jeff
