Green Drakes are limping to the finish line until September. There are still some hatching between Canyon Creek and Candle Creek. Seems like upriver they are more like 2 PM to 4PM and lower down more 4 PM to 6 PM. I’d say with the numbers of bugs we will still have drakes hatching for another 4 or 5 or 6 days I would guess.
PMD hatches are anytime from noon to 7 PM, and BWO’s from 6 PM to 8 PM. Caddis in the afternoon and evening. Iris caddis in rust or green are the best.
There are both Rusty and Olive spinners hitting the water at dusk.
Golden Stones are beginning to hatch in the upper river from the headwaters down to Camp Sherman and Gorge CG. This is just going to be improving a lot as we move into July and August. With the hatch beginning, the stonefly nymphs are migrating and active. You know if you read my reports how stoked we are about golden stone nymphs all the time anyway, but jeez, now its even better!
The Frenchie nymph is one of our hottest flies right now on the Metolius. Its a great little mayfly nymph and worth a shot. Zebra Midges have been a surprise this season. WOW. Any little mayfly nymph is a good bet, and the 2 Bit Hooker is another standout.
Bull Trout fishing is good, and they are on streamers. Bring an 8 weight and go for it. Mornings are the best time. We have an amazing selection of flies for the Metolius, and we have some freaking great streamers this season. It is our best selection ever.
