Metolius River fishing report 5/31/19

Green Drakes and PMD’s are the hot hatches. We are getting a lot of questions about the Green Drakes, and the answer is the hatch is on, it will be getting better, the next 3 to       3 1/2 weeks are the best times of the hatch. The fish will be looking up from 2 to 5 PM everyday regardless of how good the actual is coming off. The drakes have been hatching lightly for 2 weeks and the fish want to eat them. Put a few patterns over the good water and you’ll probably be rewarded even if the hatch isn’t gangbuster. But, the hatch is going to be gangbusters soon enough. Maybe today….maybe tomorrow….either way, the fish are eating them now.
PMD’s are pretty strong. We have been doing best on Cripples and Emergers, as well as Duns. Spinner falls are happening at dusk.
There have been some decent caddis hatches and with warmer, dryer weather in the forecast now, that is just going to get better.
Goldenstones won’t really hatch in great numbers for another month, but there are a few here and there.
Yellow Sallies are on the Upper River around Lake Creek and Camp Sherman.
Euro nymphing is excellent in the Upper river from Gorge to Riverside CG, or any water wadeable over the fish.
Indicator fishing is also good with Golden Stone nymphs and Red Lightning Bugs, Hares Ears, Soft Hackle PT’s and Caddis Pupa.

Bull Trout fishing is okay, not great, but worth the effort with your big streamers.
