Quick lil’ update 5/13/24

With so many things changing quickly and new info from the weekend guides and friends that were out fishing I wanted to get some new updates online for you.

Lower Deschutes– Over the weekend we found fewer Adult Salmonflies and Goldenstones in the Warm Springs to Trout Creek drift than we thought would happen with the hot weather. Not a big deal, every hour more and more will migrate to the shoreline and hatch and every afternoon and evening more and more will fly and lay eggs.
Downstream going below Whitehorse and in the Maupin area it is more of the prime hatch now.
Later this week and into next week will see better big bug hatches on the Lower D in all areas.

Crooked River flows dropped to the mid-300’s today. I suspect it will drop a bit more by the weekend and hold steady around 275 for the summer. Stonefly Maidens, if you’re reading this, you ladies lucked out for your outing this week.
I expect to see the Mother’s Day Caddis really crank up now.

I got an update form the Deschutes National Forest Recreation Leader this afternoon and she says that hazard tree removal is finishing up and this saturday the road crew is putting docks in at Crane Prairie, Rock Creek and Lava Lake.
Little Lava lake access is still blocked by snow.

I saw a buddy on Crane this weekend with a monster Brookie. Biggest I’ve seen in years. He launched in an inflatable with an electric motor.

Hosmer is now ice free but the gate to get through Century Drive is slated to open 5/21, but I doubt the road up to the launch is going to be accessible yet. Keep melting snow.

The Road to Paulina Lake is scheduled to open at 8 am on May 15th. I have been trying to figure out if Paulina Lake Lodge is going to have their $10 fee access to the private ramp there. I would assume so.
I do not think East Lake will have much in the way of boat launch access for a bit. I’m guessing tubes and pontoons and wading the shoreline will be an option first. I am not sure if it has iced out yet. A lot to figure out this week.

Chick and Haystack remain good and worth the trip.
North and South Twin are good options this week.
Chironomids, Blobs, Callibaetis (including emergers and duns at Haystack), Leeches & Damsel Nymphs are all good bets.
I’d wade fish the edges at Chickahominy, bring a boat or tube to the rest of them.
