Lil’ River Update mid-week for you 4/1/26

No April Fools here, I wanted to tell you good river news, the Crooked has come up to 147 CFS, which is so nice on the nymphing days to snag less rock and weed, I heard the hatch was “off” yesterday and I wonder if that had to do with increasing levels? Mostly the BWO hatch has been really good, as has the nymphing action.
The Middle Deschutes has come down about 100+ cfs, certainly not as low as it will go, but access will be improved and wading safety too. March Brown Hatches have been strong.
And, indeed this cool cloudy weather is improving the mayfly hatches on the Metolius. Cinygmula #14-16 during the afternoon were strong yesterday with #18 Blue Wing Olives also in the mix. Fish were eating dries, and the nymph and streamer fishing yesterday was really good.
2 more days of this weather would be a good invitation to make plans for the Metolius and bring your dry fly rod.

More to come this weekend with the regular report, but these things were worth sharing today.

  1. Yesterday was a strange day on the Met. (April 1) I fished it for 5 hours and never saw another angler…that’s never happened. Trout below Allingham were non existent, even in my never fail spots. No whities either. There were zero bug hatches too (Maybe the front shut everything down) I was able to salvage the day drifting a white jig streamer through two deep holes and caught to nice bulls. Not huge, but 20 or so inchers. Left, had dinner in town at the open door and then hit the FT3 movie!

  2. Wow! 147 CFM. That’s incredible compared to the high-flow Haigler Creek outside Payson, AZ at 10.4 this morning.
