Seasonal Road Closures

The road to Newberry National Monument accessing East and Paulina Lakes and the Cascade Lakes Highway closed on November 18. The Deschutes County Road Department has relocated the southern gate on the Cascade Lakes Highway to the Lava Lake Road junction. As of April 22^nd, the Highway remains closed from Lava Lake to Dutchman Flat Snowpark near Mt. Bachelor. However, the Lava Lake Campground and boat launch remained closed and access to Lava Lake is limited to small craft, kayaks and float tubes at this time. Deschutes County is preparing for an estimated opening date of April 30^th. Deschutes County is targeting an opening date of April 30^th for the Paulina Lake Road (Forest Service Road 21). I am getting word today that this may not be happening until May 7th.

Some people are going up the back side from China Hat. Never done that myself and it’s probably not for most people.

As for Hosmer, I know some guys have gone in, but the gate remains closed at Lava Lake Jct and if they went around the gate, we certainly don’t recommend that.

Hopefully Paulina Lake road will open soon, like tomorrow or the next day, but the county seems set on next week.

Crane, Wickiup, Little Lava are great choices and certainly open.
