The Golden Stones are still hatching well in the upper river and have expended the range into the top of the canyon. I’d say in a week we will see some around the hatchery too.
Along with Golden Stones, keep an eye out for Salmonflies now too around Wizard Falls. This is the time of year we see the big bugs again on the Metolius. Usually they are around for a week to 10 days so let me know if you start seeing them.
Other stones that are important are Yellow Sally and the beginning of the massive Little Olive Stones that explode in September. If you don’t have an Olive CDC Caddis or Hemingway you need to have them for the next 6 weeks.
PMDs and BWO’s are strong now at some point every afternoon to early evening.
Ameletus hatches are still on around Wizard Falls about 2 to 3. it looks like a Flav if you are trying to match the hatch. We have a great Film Critic and our #12 or #14 Purple Comparadun is a good match.
Caddis are getting stronger. Iris Caddis and Siddac are 2 patterns I wouldn’t be without now. There are increasing numbers of tiny #20 yellow caddis. We have the exact Iris to match that.
Finish the night with Rust or Olive Spinners.
Nymphs are great of course. I’m still very strong on the Carotene Jig. We have so many little tungsten patterns that are perfect to get down in the Fly Fishing Only Waters.
Bull Trout fishing is still better than average for this time of year. Most of the fish are coming on White Streamers.
Thur and Fri lots of big salmon flies below Allen Springs CG.
